Cytoplasmic Transport: Bacteria Turn to Glass Unless Kicked
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bacteria lack the cytoskeleton and motors of eukaryotic cells, and their cytoplasm has been considered to be purely fluid. New data show that bacterial cytoplasm can solidify to resemble a soft glass, unless enzymatic activity creates motions to fluidize it.

Nucleotide transport in Rhodobacter capsulatus.
Cytoplasmic membrane vesicles isolated from the gram-negative photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus catalyzed the transport of nucleotides. No transport occurred in the intact bacteria unless they were pretreated with EDTA. The transport rate was measured by incorporation of radioactive phosphate into externally added ADP or by incorporation of nonradioactive phosphate into added labe...
متن کاملGliding movement of and bidirectional transport along single native microtubules from squid axoplasm: evidence for an active role of microtubules in cytoplasmic transport
Native microtubules prepared from extruded and dissociated axoplasm have been observed to transport organelles and vesicles unidirectionally in fresh preparations and more slowly and bidirectionally in older preparations. Both endogenous and exogenous (fluorescent polystyrene) particles in rapid Brownian motion alight on and adhere to microtubules and are transported along them. Particles can s...
متن کاملAccelerator modes of a kicked particle in a square well
We study accelerator modes of a particle, confined in an one-dimensional infinite square well potential, subjected to a time-periodic pulsed field. Dynamics of such a particle can be described by one generalization of the kicked rotor. In comparison with the kicked rotor, this generalization is shown to have a much larger parametric space for existence of the modes. Using this freedom we provid...
متن کاملQuantum transport with cold atoms in time-dependent optical potentials: the role of quasi-momentum in the resonant dynamics of the atom–optics kicked rotor
We examine the effect of the initial atomic momentum distribution on the dynamics of the atom–optical realisation of the quantum kicked rotor. The atoms are kicked by a pulsed optical lattice, the periodicity of which implies that quasi–momentum is conserved in the transport problem. We study and compare experimentally and theoretically two resonant limits of the kicked rotor: in the vicinity o...
متن کاملTransport properties of kicked and quasi-periodic Hamiltonians
We study transport properties of Schrödinger operators depending on one or more parameters. Examples include the kicked rotor and operators with quasi-periodic potentials. We show that the mean growth exponent of the kinetic energy in the kicked rotor and of the mean square displacement in quasi-periodic potentials is generically equal to 2: this means that the motion remains ballistic, at leas...
